Why Most People Can’t Express Themselves at Work—and How to Fix It

If you’ve ever sat in a meeting struggling to explain your idea, you’re not alone. Most people find it hard to express themselves clearly at work. The surprising reason? They haven't practiced doing it in their personal life either.

At first, this sounds strange. Why would talking about feelings help you communicate better at work? Because communication is communication. If you can’t explain what you feel, it’s even harder to explain a project timeline or pitch an idea.

When you practice describing simple emotions like excitement or nervousness, you begin learning how to organize thoughts and speak with clarity. This creates a solid foundation you can carry into any professional setting.

Here’s the trick: start with what you know. Say how you feel, then add why. "I'm excited because it's a new environment where I can grow." Build from there.

Once you're used to expressing your thoughts personally, it's easier to adjust your tone and structure for workplace conversations. That’s how you go from silent to sharp in meetings.
